How I Was Inspired to Writing the LA Story Series
How I Was Inspired to Write
the LA Story Series
1. The City of Dreams: Los Angeles as a Character
Los
Angeles has always fascinated me. The city is known for its bright lights,
sprawling urban landscapes, and the allure of fame. But for me, LA is more than
just a backdrop; it’s a character in itself. The juxtaposition of glamour and
grit, sun-soaked days and shadowy nights, create a dynamic setting where stories
of struggle, success, heartbreak, and redemption unfold.
I was in
LA when the idea for the series first struck me. As I wandered through its
diverse neighbourhoods, I couldn’t help but notice the stories all around
me—people chasing dreams, wrestling with their pasts, and navigating the
complexities of love and ambition. I realised that LA wasn’t just a place where
stories happened; it was the perfect metaphor for the highs and lows of life
itself. That’s when I knew I had to write a series set in this vibrant,
multifaceted city.
2. Characters Rooted in Reality
When I
started developing the LA Story series, the characters were the most
important element for me. I didn’t want to create cookie-cutter versions of LA
stereotypes. Instead, I was inspired to write authentic and deeply human
characters—flawed, ambitious, and searching for something greater. But in all
that, there was love.
Each
character in the LA Story series was inspired by people I’ve met or
observed, blending aspects of real human experiences into fictional narratives.
From the outside looking in, you would think these characters have everything,
but when you look deeper, I wanted these stories to reflect the diversity of
dreams in LA.
The
characters' struggles mirror the city itself: complex, beautiful, and often
messy. Whether it’s dealing with rejection in Hollywood or navigating the
intricacies of personal relationships, their journeys are universal but with a
uniquely LA twist.
3. The Power of Personal Experience
My
personal experiences played a significant role in shaping the LA Story
series. As someone who’s been immersed in the world of storytelling—both as a
writer and observer—I found myself inspired by the people I encountered in LA.
I listened to stories of friends and strangers alike, each with their own
dreams and battles.
I’ve
always believed that fiction is a reflection of reality, and I drew from
real-life challenges and victories to give depth to the series. My own highs
and lows—the moments of self-discovery and finding strength through
vulnerability—wove their way into the narrative, adding layers to the emotional
core of each story.
4. The Influence of Sports, Film and Music
LA is
synonymous with Hollywood and the entertainment industry, and that cultural
influence heavily inspired the LA Story series and California Series.
I found myself thinking about how people in LA are shaped not just by their own
lives but also by the media they consume—the films, TV shows, and music that
surround them.
Music
especially became a driving force for me while writing the series. With its
raw, unfiltered emotion, the city's music scene inspired some of the series’
pivotal moments. I would often write with specific songs or film scenes in
mind, using them as a guide to capture the right emotional tone. LA’s
connection to creativity helped shape the pacing and rhythm of the stories,
creating an atmosphere that felt cinematic yet grounded.
5. Themes of Hope, Resilience and Love
The LA
Story series ultimately revolves around three major themes: hope, resilience
and love. The city is a beacon for dreamers but also a place that tests them.
Throughout the series, I wanted to explore how people hold onto hope in the
face of adversity and how resilience is built when everything seems to be
falling apart, especially when it involves love.
With its
shimmering promise of fame and fortune, Los Angeles sometimes feels like a
place of impossible dreams. Yet, there’s beauty in the pursuit of those dreams,
even when the outcome isn’t what you expect. Through the characters and their
experiences, I sought to convey that success isn’t just about achieving fame or
fortune but about the personal growth that comes from never giving up.
6. The Beginning of a Series
What
started as a single idea has since grown into an entire series, each instalment
building on the stories of characters who are interconnected by the city they
live in. Each book stands alone, but together, they form an embroidery of love,
loss, ambition, and self-discovery, all set against the backdrop of Los
Angeles.
I fell in love with Luke Matthews from The Quarterback while writing another series about Zach Harding and Madison York's story, the California Series, Sonoma With You. Luke’s screams were so loud that they took me to another universe—yet linked to the California Series.
As the
series evolved, I realised there are always more stories to tell in LA—new
voices, struggles, and dreams to explore. And that’s what excites me most about
writing this series: the endless possibilities for where these characters can
go and how their lives will unfold in the City of Angels.

Conclusion: Why the LA Story Series Matters
to Me
The LA
Story series is more than just a collection of stories; it reflects my
journey as a writer and observer of life. Through these narratives, I’ve found
a way to express the complexities of chasing dreams, dealing with heartbreak,
and finding hope amidst uncertainty.
I hope you connect with the stories in the LA Story series as much as I connected with writing them. Whether you’ve lived in LA, visited, or have heard about the city's magic, I believe there’s something universal in the characters' experiences. Their triumphs and failures remind us that we’re all navigating the same human experience, no matter where we are or what dreams we chase.
So, thank
you for joining me on this journey. I can’t wait for you to experience the LA
Story series and see what stories the city of Los Angeles offers.
