DUNE 2023 movie
Dune 2023 movie
Dune: Part
Two - to Hit Theatres Two Weeks Early in November 2023
There’s a buzz and excitement in the air for the Dune 2023 movie. The release date has been set! And I cannot
wait.
For those who haven’t seen Part 1 let’s take a walk down memory
lane…
Dune Part 1 released in 2021 has eclipsed the dreams of those of us who grew up on the books, and I’m no different. I absolutely love the film. I’ve watched the movie numerous amount of times – I won’t say how many times; let's say it’s at the point where I know most of the lines. And to date I still find the movie as if I’m watching it for the first time…it’s awesome.
It also made me go back and re-read the books again. So, when 2023
arrives I’ll be beyond up-to-date on my Dune Saga – see my previous post
about the Dune books.
With Denis Villeneuve again at the helm and the cast he has
gathered are well-known names he has previously worked with behind the scene,
it brings quiet confidence about the finishing of the Dune project. One of my
favourites is that the music is done by Hans Zimmer who’s composing the score
alone with Benjamin Wallfisch who co-composed the brilliant Blade Runner 2049.
Villeneuve has again assembled one of the most star-studded casts
in recent memory for Dune. In front of the camera, he has Timothee Chalamet
joined by Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave
Bautista, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Stephen Henderson, Charlotte Rampling,
Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.
We’ve been told that Zandaya will have a much larger part in
Dune-Part Two, for those of us who have read the books, Chani plays a small
part but an important part. She is the love interest of Paul Atreides.
And if anyone was unsure about Chalamet playing Paul Atreides,
then watch The King, currently on Netflix and Call Me by Your Name.
He nailed it as Paul Atreides!
Behind the scenes, he continues his streak of working with
brilliant cinematographers and this time he enlists Greig Fraser (Rogue One,
Vice). Jacqueline West (The Revenant) is designing the costumes alongside Bob
Morgan. Villeneuve is again working with production designer Patrice
Vermette (Sicario) and editor Joe Walker (Arrival). Also note: author Kevin J.
Anderson, who co-wrote the Dune prequel books, is credited as a creative
consultant and Brian Herbert, one of the many executive producers on the film.
And I have watched all of these movies, which is why I’m excited and cannot wait for the movie's conclusion.
Villeneuve is a powerhouse when it comes to the science fiction
genre. But between Sicario, Arrival, and Blade Runner 2049,
I can’t wait to see what he does with this material. Dune Part One has been
phenomenal!
The official synopsis from Warner Brothers - Dune is a mythic and
emotionally charged hero's journey. It tells the story of Paul Atreides, a
brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his
understanding. He travels to the most dangerous planet in the universe to
ensure the future of his family and his people. But malevolent forces explode
into conflict over the planet's exclusive supply of the most precious resource
in existence - a commodity capable of unlocking humanity's greatest potential.
Only those who can conquer their fear will survive.
“I
would not agree to make this adaptation of the book with one
single movie,” says Villeneuve. “The world is too complex. It’s a
world that takes its power in details.” – Denis Villeneuve
As the Dune trailer says, Beyond Fear, Destiny Awaits and Pink
Floyd’s Eclipse play in the background. The happy-go-lucky song becomes
haunting and daunting under Hans Zimmer. This will set the tone for the movie.

For Villeneuve, it’s a story about a planet being mined to death that
was not merely a space adventure, but a prophecy.
“No matter what you believe, Earth is changing,
and we will have to adapt. That’s why I think that Dune, this book, was written
in the 20th century. It was a distant portrait of the reality of the oil and
the capitalism and the exploitation—the overexploitation—of Earth. Today,
things are just worse. It’s a coming-of-age story, but also a call for action
for the youth.” – Denis
Villeneuve
The scope of this movie looks large and grand in vision, an ambitious adaptation. As Empire had said It’s one of the most daring movies in decades. Dune is an intergalactic story by Paul Atreides.
About the book in the saga, I agree with Denis. It does touch on
many different strands that are relevant to today. It’s a coming-of-age story
about environmental issues, religion, economics, philosophy, politics, prescience
and prophecy; it’s a call to arms or actions that change is needed. And all of
that cannot be told in one movie.
Dune is a fictional, far-distant future, in the year 10,191 where
noble houses lead a feudal society stretching across many planets, which are
considered fiefs – these are the estate of land held on condition of offering
services to someone higher.
Paul Atreides, the protagonist, is the son of Duke Leto Atreides
and Lady Jessica, who’s a Bene Gesserit disciple. The Bene Gesserit is a
matriarchal religious sect that wields superhuman powers obtained after years
of demanding physical and mental training. They have their political
motivations and aspirations to acquire more power – this is partly why Lady
Jessica was installed into the House of Atreides.
Much of the population is suspicious of the Bene Gesserit, and
calls them "witches". It’s in part because of their strange abilities
and warrior women. But ultimately, the Bene Gesserit devotees take part in a
long-running genetic breeding program to birth a male, a messiah known as the
Kwisatz Haderach in the hope that they control.
Yes, even though the names are crazy, it’s all part of Frank
Herbert’s world-building.
Dune begins with the entire Atreides family having to relocate
from the ocean planet Caladan to manage the harvest of a very important export
called melange, also known colloquially as spice. It can only be found on the
desert planet Arrakis.
Duke Leto is ordered to do this by the Padishah Emperor Shaddam
IV, who is secretly in cahoots with members of the House Harkonnen, who are
long-time rivals of House Atreides. The Atreides' time on Arrakis quickly
becomes dangerous, and Jessica and Paul end up sheltering with the Fremen
(Freemen), the planet's native people who live out amongst the dangerous sand
dunes.
And being on Dune brings out Paul's training, and teachings from
his mother; the spice also allows his prescient to come forth.
There are plans within plans within plans...
There’s a prophecy, is Paul the man to deliver it? His terrible purpose.
On top of the new movie, Denis Villeneuve is also involved with
the new TV series about Bene Gesserit called Dune: The Sisterhood, a
female-focused spinoff series. Villeneuve will direct the pilot of the series
along with Prometheus co-writer Jon Spaihts, who also collaborated on the
script for Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune feature, and will pen the TV series. The
release date for the pilot hasn’t been confirmed as Legendary Television for
Warner Media’s still-unnamed streaming service.
If Dune – Part One didn’t get you into the mood, hyped or juiced for Dune – Part Two, I hope this will.

There are some speculations that it could be based on the books by
Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson’s novel the Sisterhood of Dune which focuses
on the early stages of the Bene Gesserit thousands of years before the events
of Frank Herbert’s Dune saga. The timeline is to be confirmed.
